Heyshope Fishing

The Heyshope Dam is one of the best bass fishing destinations in South Africa with bass of up to 5 kg having been recorded. The assegaai river which feeds the Heyshope Dam has good stocks of Yellowfish which now occur in large numbers in the dam. Carp fishermen also have good success with specimens of up to 20kg recorded.

Safety and security issues have been reported in the past and there is now a 14km section of the shoreline just south of the dam wall which has a security fence. This area is safe and one is able to park your vehicle and launch boats from this section of the shore. Angling from the shore is possible, but the best bass fishing in Heyshope Dam is in areas accessible only by boat.

Artificial lures used in Heyshope for bass include spinnerbaits, crankbaits and buzzbaits which work well around the weed beds and Texas rigged flukes work around the standing timber and stumps.

Fishing strategy in the Heyshope Dam is usually based upon the weather. Make sure you get good weather forecasts as the weather can be very unpredictable with strong winds and thunderstorms in the spring and summer. Plan your fishing so that you go out into the wind in the morning and return with the wind in the afternoon. The wind can whip up the dam into a state which is very dangerous for boating, especially small boats without a wet deck.
