Bass also occur in the Grootdraai Dam and the smaller surrounding dams, with good results on plastics and other artificial lures, as well as on platties and other small live baits. Many of the smaller dams in the area have also been stocked with trout, making the Grootdraai area perfect for a variety of species.

Grootdraai Dam (Standerton) Information
The Grootdraai Dam is located in the upper part of the Vaal River less than 10km upriver of the town of Standerton. Grootdraai has a water catchment area of 8195km2, a average annual rainfall of about 750mm, and a natural inflow of 580 million m3/annum.
Grootdraai Dam wall is a composite wall constructed with a centrally situated concrete gravity section 360m long and two earth fill flanks which result in a total crest length of 2180m and a maximum dam wall height of 42m above the foundation level. The Grootdraai Dam was completed in 1982 and was built mainly to fulfill the water needs of the SASOL I, II and III coal to petrol plants at Secunda, ESKOM's, Tutuka Power Station as well as the Matla, Duvha, Kendal and Kriel power stations located on the coal fields in the nearby Olifants River basin.
