Bloemhof Dam Information
The Bloemhof Dam
is situated on the Vaal River, downstream of Vaal Dam approximately 2km
upstream of the town of Bloemhof. The Bloemhof Dam
was originally known as the Oppermansdrif Dam, and was build during the
sixties and commissioned in 1970. The Bloemhof Dam is a
composite dam comprising earthfill flanks on each side of a very long
305m long central concrete spillway. Due to the flat topography of the Bloemhof
area, the Bloemhof dam wall is very long with a
total crest length of 4 270m and a maximum wall height of only 35.2m
above deepest foundation level.
When full, the capacity of Bloemhof Dam is 1 269 million m3 with a
total surface area of 223 square kilometers. Bloemhof Dam is therefore
a very large and shallow reservoir in an area with relatively low
rainfall ( 474mm/a ) and high potential evaporation ( ~1800mm/a ).
Bloemhof Dam was build to collect runoff from below the Vaal Dam
to supply water to users in the Lower Vaal River region.
The Bloemhof Dam supplies water to various industrial
and municipal areas, but most of the water released from the Bloemhof
Dam is used for riparian irrigation along the Vaal River.
A total 17 000ha is irrigated with water from the Bloemhof Dam.
Water is also released from Bloemhof Dam to suppliment
water supply to the Vaalharts Government Water Scheme where
approximately 37 000ha of farm land are under irrigation. The Vaalharts
scheme is presently the largest user of water from Bloemhof Dam
and the water released from Bloemhof Dam is diverted
from the Vaalharts Weir via a canal system to the irrigation scheme in
the Vaalharts River catchment - a tributary of the Vaal
River.
