St Lucia Area Map & Places of Interest

Use this page to understand where St Lucia sits on the north-eastern coast of South Africa, and what’s within easy reach for day trips and multi-day adventures. If you message your dates, we’ll help you choose the best mix for your time in the area.

Cape Vidal

Our closest snorkeling destination with fantastic, safe snorkeling, and a popular whale viewing spot. The road to Cape Vidal goes through the Greater St. Lucia Wetlands Park where game viewing is very productive. Rhino, buffalo and a wide variety of game and birds are often seen en route. Cape Vidal is also home to Samango monkeys on the Red Data List.

Lake St Lucia

Africa's largest saltwater system (about 70km long), home to large hippo and crocodile populations. The shallow average depth makes it ideal for water birds. St Lucia and surrounds are among the best birdwatching areas in Africa with hundreds of species recorded, and the region is known for a rare mix of terrestrial and marine wildlife.

Sodwana Bay

One of the world’s most renowned scuba diving locations. Sodwana also offers world-class snorkeling and pristine beaches with accommodation from campsites to luxury lodges. Crystal clear waters, extensive coral reefs and a high concentration of marine life make this a standout coastal destination.

Lake Sibaya

A remote freshwater lake with turquoise water. Sibaya used to connect to the ocean, and has several endemic fish species adapted to freshwater. There’s a small population of hippos and crocodiles, and access is generally for 4x4 vehicles.

Mabibi, Lala Nek, Rocktail Bay, Black Rock, Dog Point

These locations fall within the Maputaland Turtle Sanctuary: pristine bays protected by sandstone reefs with beautiful snorkeling and swimming. Water is typically crystal clean year round. These areas are generally accessed by 4x4 vehicles.

Bhanga Nek

Also within the Maputaland Turtle Sanctuary and a key destination for turtle walks. Great snorkeling and occasional marine turtle sightings in the water. Accommodation includes camping and rustic bush camps.

Kosi Bay

A beautiful saltwater lake system with sandy surrounds and famously clear water. Home to numerous fish species and the traditional fish traps (kraals) tended by local communities.

Tembe Elephant Reserve

Established to protect an existing elephant population and known for some of Africa’s oldest and largest elephants (big tuskers). A Big 5 reserve often suited to guests wanting a less mainstream wildlife experience.

Jozini Dam

A scenic dam near the Swaziland border at the foot of the Lebombo Mountains. Jozini is known for tigerfish and is one of the few places in South Africa where tigerfish are targeted. Contact us for accommodation options and trip planning from St Lucia.

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park

Our most popular Big 5 game drive destination — renowned for scenic landscapes and excellent wildlife viewing.
