Where to begin your South Africa camping trip
The starting point for your camping trip will be either in

decide to use. Campervans / motorhomes are for hire near to all these
airports. Plan your route according to your interests; if you enjoy
wildlife, spend more time in the north eastern parts of South Africa at
camping sites in places like the Kruger National Park, St Lucia and
Hluhluwe.

The Eastern Escarpment is spectacular with mountains, canyons and
waterfalls, an area you must visit if your are in the Kruger Park area.
There are lovely camping sites with very good facilities in the Blyde
River Canyon area with beautiful places to visit including God's
Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes and Pilgrims Rest.
The best road from the Kruger National Park to the East Coast and St
Lucia is via Swaziland which has great camping sites in wildlife
reserves where you have animals moving through and sleeping in your
camping site. Swaziland border crossings are simple and the roads in
the country are good, but beware of animals in the road.
The South African north East Coast
Destinations include Kosi Bay, Sodwana Bay, iSimangaliso, St
Lucia. At all of these places along the north east coast of South
Africa, camping sites for motor homes have good clean facilities and

reserves abundant wildlife with activities including turtle nesting
tours, whale watching, game viewing tours, fishing, kayaking and hiking
amongst others.
The Drakensberg Mountains
Camping in the Drakensberg is one of the experiences on your South
Africa camping trip which you will never forget. You can either use one
of the many camping sites as a base camp for day trails, or you can
hike with tents on walking trails and sleep in the mountains on a
multiple day walking trail. An alternative to camping in the
Drakensberg is the use of caves, which can be booked ahead of time,

ground is cold in the winter so you have to be well prepared when
camping in South Africa in the mountains in the winter.

sunshine, awesome landscapes and a photographers paradise. Traveling
through the karoo can take 2 days and there are several good camping

Karoo is one of the best places in the world for star gazing and
astronomy and the town of Sutherland is home to the SALT (South African
Large Telescope), an international astronomy project situated here
because of the clean air and minimal light pollution in this part of
South Africa.

sandy bays, rocky headlands and beaches offering of the best surfing in
the world. Destinations include Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, Wilderness and

The Western Cape
The Western Cape has much to offer and any holiday in South Africa
would be incomplete without a visit to Table Mountain, Cape Point and
Hermanus where wales can be viewed from the shore when they come into
the bay to give birth. In this area of South Africa, camping sites are
situates along the coast, in the mountains and at several dams and
lakes. The area is characterized by vineyards, wine farms and beautiful
mountains which drop down to the ocean. When Planning a South Africa
camping trip, bear in mind that the Western Cape is a winter rainfall
area.
The South African West Coast
The West Coast of South Africa is a semi-desert area with fantastic
