Things to do while at Roodeplaat Dam

Roodeplaat Fishing

The Roodeplaat Camping sites which are in the northern section of the Roodeplaat Nature Reserve are perfect for fishing because the northern section of the reserve is zoned for fishing, boating and camping. Fishing at Roodeplaat is either from the shore, boat, tubes or kayaks.

The Roodeplaat Dam has healthy populations of Carp, Bass, Kurper and Barbel and the dam has produced excellent catches of very big Carp and Barbel. Bass catches have also improved over the last few years.

Fishing at Roodeplaat Dam can be excellent when conditions are right. Watch for fish feeding activity on the surface where fish sometimes gather in large numbers.

Hiking Trails

From the Roodeplaat Camping Site, you can do a 7km hiking trail which takes you through the Roodeplaat Nature Reserve where you can spot up to 250 bird species and animals including Blue Wildebeest, Kudu, Zebra, Warthogs and Waterbuck.

There are also birding hides along the shores of the dam where visitors can observe a large variety of waterbirds.
