The Pongola River system includes fast-flowing sections, rapids, floodplain channels and the waters upstream of Jozini Dam. We choose the best stretches based on river height, clarity, temperature, water levels and flow at the time of your trip.
The Pongola River is still one of the most untouched rivers in South Africa, flowing mostly through wilderness that is often inaccessible. It is home to a very healthy population of tigerfish.
Over the last 25 years we have explored the Pongola River and the Jozini Dam extensively and fished for tigerfish in the river upstream of the Jozini Dam on the Pongola floodplain, in the Jozini Dam, and along the Lower Pongola, where the river meanders through the Makatini flats before crossing the border into Mozambique.
Targeting tigerfish with artificial lures and fly fishing tackle in the rapids and flowing water of the Pongola River is one of the most exciting, exhilarating and adrenaline packed forms of fishing, with explosive strikes, flying fish and screaming reels.
