whole list of game fish that move up and down the coast and vast areas
of offshore reef, home to bottom fish which come inshore to feed.
The secret to a good Rocktail Bay fishing trip is to be prepared with
the correct tackle and bait. Here is a basic list of fishing tackle
which you need for in your tackle box.

Steel trace - min 26 kg
Pliers & Split ring pliers
Assorted hooks, swivels and split rings
Bait board, Knife and cotton
Fluorocarbon leader
Live bait non return clips for sliding livies - bring a few!
Small hooks and thin monofilament for catching live bait
Live bait bucket with air pump for maximum pleasure
Grapnel sinkers for fishing over sand
Assorted sinkers for fishing off the rocks
Plugs and Spoons for early and late fishing sessions

Very Important - Bring good, completely closed, long fishing boots -

Rocktail Bay, Black
Rock and the surrounding area
The accommodation is close to
Rocktail Bay and Black Rock
A 4x4 vehicle is required to get to our accommodation.
Rocktail Bay, Black Rock, Lala Nek and Bhanga Nek are within a short
drive of our accommodation.
Rocktail Bay
Our accommodation at Rocktail bay is situated perfectly to use as a
base to explore the northern Maputaland Coast. The closest beach to our
accommodation is Rocktail Bay, a place which is famous for its
excellent fishing, beautiful forests and endless beaches.
The southern tip of Rocktail Bay consists of a flat sandstone reef
which is exposed over low tide. Bait fish shelter in the bay behind the
point, attracting a large variety of game fish and other predatory
species such as snapper and rock cod. Giant Kingfish are common here
and one can often see them swimming in small shoals, hunting in the
shallows. Rocktail bay is well known for excellent catches of big fish
on artificial lures, live bait and on fly, you just have to get there!
On the map, Rocktail Bay lies between Lala Nek and Black Rock, also
beautiful beaches and excellent fishing spots. Our accommodation is
within a short drive of other famous fishing places, such as Black
Rock, a little piece of paradise where huge Kingfish are regularly
hooked, some landed.
Black Rock
Only 6km from our
accommodation, Black Rock is easily accessible and perfect for a day
trip, fishing, surfing or just enjoying the beach. Black Rock is a
large sandstone point jutting into the ocean, its black colour caused
by black algal growth on the surface of the rock. Black rock is the
furthest point visible from Rocktail Bay.
Black Rock is a good spot for days when the south westerly wind is
blowing, offering protection on the northern side of the rock. Game
fish come into the bay where shoals of Natal Moonies, Tropical
Halfbeaks, sprats and shad attract game fish such as Kingfish and King
Mackerel. At low tide, Black Rock is a good spot for light tackle, and
better with heavier tackle when the tide is high. Black Rock is also a
good place to get live bait.
Of all the good snorkeling spots accessible from our accommodation,
Black rock is one of the safest and most sheltered. Low tide is the
best
time to snorkel at Black Rock. Be sure to take a tide table along, it
is essential for planning your days.
You can find a tide table here: http://satides.co.za/
Lala Nek
From our accommodation, Lala
Nek is also easily accessible by 4x4. Lala Nek is a very good spot for
snorkeling and fishing and there is a lovely shady picnic site at the
parking area just a short walk from beach. Look out for the Gold Banded
Forester in the picnic site, they are a rare butterfly, but
we see them there often.
