Massingir Dam Tiger Fishing
The Massingir Dam is fed by the Olifants River and
is
situated in the south west of Mozambique. All the rivers flowing off
South Africa's Great Eastern Escarpment have natural populations of
Tiger Fish in the lower reaches in the Lowveld and Mozambique. These
rivers include the Olifants, Sabie, Komatie, Sand and the Pongola
River, which is the southern most range of the Tiger Fish.
Tiger fishing in Massingir Dam is similar to tiger fishing in Lake
Kariba, Cahora Bassa and the Jozini Dam, with fishermen having good
success on spinners, spoons, fly and a variety of baits including
sardine, chicken livers and live Tilapia and other species.
The upper reaches of the Massingir Dam, where the Olifants river flows
in, are shallow and usually produce fish. These shallow areas are home
to a variety of small fish which the tiger fish prey on and is a good
place to find big tiger fish feeding. There are also hundreds coves
around the dam with good structure in the form of vegetation, dead
trees and drop-offs.
Be aware that permits are now required for boating and fishing at
Massingir. Covane Lodge will assist clients in this regard. Covane
Lodge also has a slipway and easy access to good fishing areas.
Much has ben said about the netting in Massingir, but the truth is that
the tiger fish populations are still very healthy. The main target
species for the gill netting is the Tilapia, which is also a prolific
breeder and still occurs in huge numbers in the Dam.
