or 'Keurbooms'
as the locals know it is situated about halfway between Nature's Valley
and Plettenberg Bay on the Cape south coast, 200km due west of Port
Elizabeth. Keurbooms is one of the popular destinations along the
garden route and is a perfect holiday destination for South African
families, fishing trips and stop overs on longer tours through South
Africa, with lots to see and do.
This part of the Western Cape is one of the most scenic parts of South Africa, with white sandy beaches, rocky shores and estuaries, all with the Fynbos and forest covered Outeniqua mountains as a backdrop. Just over the mountains to the north lies the little Karoo with interesting places to visit including Outdshoorn and the Cango Caves, situated in a breathtaking semi-desert landscape of low growing shrubs, rocks and the occasional ostrich. Keurboomstrand and Plettenberg bay are near the mouth of the Keurbooms River, named after one of the common trees in the area, the Keurboom - Virgilia divaricata, a striking medium sized tree with prolific purple flowers. The Keurbooms river flows for 60km through the Langkloof and down through the Outeniqua mountains into the Indian Ocean. `The Keurbooms river mouth, just with most other estuary mouths along the South African coastline, is a dynamic system which changes with high seas, floods and droughts. The estuary is popular for fishing and a variety of water sports. Keurbooms accommodation options range from camping in campsites along the Keurbooms river or close to the beach to self catering chalets, holiday homes, luxury lodges, hotels and spa's. There is accommodation available in Keurbooms to suite your budget, and remember, cheap accommodation in Keurbooms does not mean that it is not nice accommodation. Keurbooms Fishing
Keurboomstrand
offers a variety of rock and surf
fishing
options, from sandy beaches and bays to rocky areas. The mouth of the
Keurbooms River lies 8km to the west of Keurboomstrand village,
attracting fish such as the White Steenbras / Pignose Grunter (the big
ones are called 'steamers') and Dusky Cob. The rocky areas offer good
fishing spots for Silver Steenbras / Musselcracker, Galjoen, Wildeperd,
Blacktail and Shad / Elf.
Favorite baits in the area include pink prawn, crayfish, red bait, sand prawn, chokka and mussel worm. Sand prawns can be pumped in the Keurbooms River with a permit. When fishing the sandy areas off the beach target the white water on the shallower banks when the sea is calm, but when the ocean is like a washing machine, fishing is more practical in the deeper channels which form along the beach between Plett and Keurbooms. The best way to find good channels and banks is to walk along the beach at low tide, mark a good channel with a log or stick on the dunes and return at high tide. When fishing rocky areas, target areas where the water is white and foamy. At low tide, target the gullies which you cant reach when the tide is high, and at high tide, fish areas where the seaweed is exposed on the low tide. In some places you will even see where the musselcrackers have removed limpets from the rocks at high tide, leaving bare little patches. Target these areas for them with red bait and crayfish. Pack enough sinkers for the rocky shore fishing to the east of Keurbooms, there is something out there that eats sinkers! For beach fishing, grapnel sinkers work best in washy conditions and cone sinkers when there is less wash and current. If you can, arrange accommodation close to the beach at Keurbooms to allow you easy access to the water and thus more fishing hours!
