Warnings
- St Lucia Animals and your Safety
Be very careful
when walking around in St Lucia after dark because the hippopotamus in
the area come into town to enjoy the sweet grass which grows on our
laws and in the parks in town. What do you do if you encounter a
hippopotamus? The best thing to do is to move away in the opposite
direction towards some cover. If a hippo charges at you, get into a
tree very quickly and
don't come down until the hippo has moved away.
There are also leopard in St
Lucia, but they keep
out of peoples way and you will be very lucky if you see one. Leopard
are often seen on the night drives at St Lucia.
iSimangaliso Malaria Situation
There
have been no cases of
malaria in the last 10 years due to a combination of a DDT spraying
program and the drought which has lead to most of the wetlands drying up.
The area is officially classified as a low risk area.
Snakes in St Lucia
There are no records of any
visitors to the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park being bitten by a snake.
Always use a flashlight when walking in the dark in St Lucia or the
camping sites in iSimangaliso and don't step where you can't see. Wear
closed shoes when on a walking trail.
Scorpions in St
Lucia
There are no deadly scorpions
in the area and if you get stung by a scorpion here it will sting like
a wasp or bee sting.

repellent on your legs before you go on a walking trail in St Lucia or
Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. This will prevent ticks from crawling onto you
and causing very unpleasant itchy bites.
