10 Day Safari in South Africa
A fascinating combination of nature and culture, in
this 10 day South
Africa safari tour. South Africa has a dramatic history,
which
will be shared
with you in a most interesting and informative way during this tour.
And that in combination with exciting game drives in South Africa’s
most beautiful game reserves...
Day 1: Durban International
Airport to St. Lucia
We pick you up from the King Shaka International
airport
and drive you
to St. Lucia. This cozy little town is situated within the iSimangaliso
Wetland Park (Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park) and at night hippos and
other animals roam the streets and graze in our gardens and town parks!
Depending upon your time of arrival, you might have the time to do a
boat or kayak tour on the St Lucia estuary which is home to about 800
hippos, 1200 crocodiles and an impressive diversity of waterfowl.
Day 2: Wetland Game Drive & Beach
Time
The iSimangaliso Wetland Park is known as the
‘premier
bush & beach
destination’ and has completely different ecosystems compared to the
Kruger National Park and the Hluhluwe – iMfolozi Park, resulting in a
very different composition of animals, birds and plants. Today we will
take you on a game drive through the St Lucia wetlands to the beach at
Cape Vidal. We will serve lunch there and you will have a few hours to
relax on the beach or in the sea. If ocean conditions allow, we will do
some snorkeling at Cape Vidal. In the afternoon we close off the day
with a game drive through the park returning to St Lucia.
Day 3: Game Drive Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park
From St. Lucia we take you to the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi
Park,
internationally renowned for its rhino conservation efforts and its
large black and white rhino population. The park has stunning savanna
landscapes with rolling hills and is home to the Big 5 animals of
Africa! We spend the night in one of the southern camps so we can
explore the Umfolozi section early next morning.
Day 4: Game Drive Hluhluwe-iMfolozi
& visit to
Blood River Monument
In the morning we leave bright and early on a game
drive
to have the
best chance of seeing the big cats. After lunch, we leave the park and
drive to a lodge in the historical battlefields of Zululand. In the
afternoon a local guide will make us relive the site of the Battle of
Blood River, in a most interesting and fascinating way. In 1838, about
20 000 Zulu warriors attacked 464 Afrikaners or Boers (mainly of Dutch
origin) . About 3000 Zulus died in that battle, while the Afrikaners
had no casualties at all.
Day 5: Rorke’s Drift & Isandlwana
battlefields
Today we will visit the battlefields of Rorke’s
Drift and
Isandlwana,
where on the 22nd of January 1879 one of the most historic battles in
South African history took place. At Isandlwana 20 000 Zulu
soldiers
butchered 1300 British soldiers, while at Rorke’s Drift only 139
British soldiers fought off 5000 Zulus successfully. A local guide will
share all these dramatic stories here with us at the open air museum.
Day 6: Ithala Game Reserve
We leave the battlefields and make our way to Ithala
Game
Reserve.
Ithala is a jewel amongst the game reserves in the region, but is not
often visited by tourists due to its location off the main tourist
routes. In the afternoon a game drive in a open game viewer is
available.
Day 7: Ithala Game Reserve - Tembe
Elephant Park
In the morning have the option to do a walking
safari
while
accompanied by an armed parks ranger. With a bit of luck we might just
get up close with elephants, buffalo or maybe even a cheetah! After
breakfast we leave the Ithala Game Reserve and travel to the Tembe
Elephant Park where we spend the night in authentic safari tents in a
park which is home to the largest tuskers in Africa, elephant bulls
with tusks long enough to drag along the earth as they walk along.
Tembe is an amazing place: It is only accessible for 4-wheel drives and
safari vehicles and they only allow 10 vehicles per day to enter the
park. This gives guests a complete wilderness experience.
Day 8: Tembe Elephant Park - Kosi Bay
& turtle tour
Today we travel to the warm shores of the Indian
Ocean,
for lots of
sun, sea and sand at Kosi Bay, a beautiful lagoon where we will visit
the traditional fish traps the local Thonga people have used for about
500 years, and we will also have some time for snorkeling! After dinner
we take you on a turtle tour, a walk along the beach at night to search
for giant sea turtles. With a bit of luck we see the loggerhead turtle
or Leatherback turtle nest on the beach, or see their eggs hatching and
watch the baby turtles running towards the ocean.
Day 9: Relaxing on the beach
Today you have the option to either sleep in late,
spend
the day on
the tropical beach, or do a horseback safari through the beautiful
surroundings. Your lunch can be served on the beach if you wish. We
spend the night in the same lodge as the previous night. And yes, also
tonight you have the option to go on a turtle walk.
Day 10: Return to Durban
Sorry, unfortunately, today we will have to travel
back to
Durban from
where you will fly back home or continue to another part of South
Africa.
